Training for Undergraduate Students and Undergraduate-Student-Employees

This page lists training that is mandatory for undergraduate students at UC Merced, as well as training that could be mandatory depending on the situation. Some training is only required of students engaging in specific activities, such as working in laboratories. 

Training is mandatory when required by UC policy, risk assessments, governmental regulatory agencies, funding entities, accrediting bodies, and other entities external to UC Merced. Education on these topics is essential to compliance with policies, laws, regulations and restrictions.

If this is your first year at UC Merced... 

Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment Prevention

All incoming students, including transfer students, are required to attend at least one Sexual Violence Prevention Training. This requirement cannot be satisfied by any other Sexual Violence/Harassment Prevention training completed in the past. Students that do not fulfill their requirement may face consequences, including a Dean of Students Hold on their class registration.

AlcoholEdu

All incoming undergraduate students are expected to complete the EVERFI course AlcoholEdu. This course will help you in making healthy decisions regarding alcohol use during your time at UC Merced, by helping you to:

  • Develop critical skills to make thoughtful and healthy choices outside the classroom
  • Reflect on your knowledge, attitudes, and experiences related to these issues
  • Support your peers and yourself when faced with tough situations

You will receive access to this course near the start of the semester. Look for emails from University of California - Merced <automated-message@everfi-foundry.net>

Part 1 of the course takes approximately 2 hours to complete, and can be completed in multiple sessions. About 30-45 days after completing part 1 you will receive an email to complete part 2, which will only take about 15 minutes to complete, and must be completed by the end of the semester.

COVID-19 Training for Students

As an important step in protecting the campus and larger community, UC Merced has developed mandatory online training that covers the concepts and resources for mitigating the spread of coronavirus on campus and among our campus community. The training is available via CatCourses and is required for all students irrespective of whether your job or academic activities are at a campus facility. Because of the requirement, there are consequences for individuals who fail to successfully complete the training.

The COVID-19 training is only required once. If you complete the training as a student, you do not need to complete it as a student-employee, and vice-versa. If you have completed the course and continue to receive reminders, notify complianceoffice@ucmerced.edu.

If you work for the university as a student employee... 

All UC employees, including student employees, are required to complete the following mandatory training:

Employee mandatory training is available in the UC Learning Center and will be listed on the Required Training screen. If you do not have an active job/appointment you are not required to complete training and will not see training listed on the required training screen. Please check the required training screen every time you start a new job to ensure your training is up to date.

If you will be working in a laboratory... 

Students who will be working in laboratories must complete lab safety training. These three “core” classes are required of all lab workers every three years:

  • Lab Safety Fundamentals (required prior to starting work in the lab)
  • Hazmat Spill Response
  • Fire Safety

Other lab safety training is required based on the type of lab or research. If you will be working in a lab, talk to your PI or Faculty Advisor about which courses you are required to complete. More information can be found at https://ehs.ucmerced.edu/general-programs/safety-training/courses

UC Learning Center (employee training system)

If you experience technical issues with the UC Learning Center, visit the troubleshooting page at https://hr.ucmerced.edu/uclc-troubleshoot. If you are not working as an employee or in a laboratory you will not need access to the UC Learning Center.
